The Community Foundation of Portage and District is tapping into the unique perspective of the youth in our city to better the community. Executive director Mandy Dubois explains it's part of a national program entitled the RBC Future Launch Community challenge.

"One hundred and fifty communities were selected across Canada, and we were a lucky one," says Dubois. "Any youth -- which is anyone between the ages of 15 and 29 -- can apply for a grant up to $15,000 to help address any urgent issue they feel needs to be addressed in our community."

Dubois says youth look at things differently and could see an urgent need that's been completely missed previously. She notes you just apply, let them know about the idea you have, and await acceptance. Dubois stresses these are for new initiatives.

"Their solution might be something completely different than anyone else has thought of," she continues. "It's part of the Community Launch Program. Applications for the grants are done online. Deadline is September 18th of this year, giving all summer to think about it. Those selected with be announced in early fall."

Dubois adds they're looking for a few youths to also join the selection committee to determine which ideas are funded. She says, if you are between 15 and 29 years old who'd like to be a part, call the office for more information.
