The City of Portage la Prairie’s moving forward with constructing a new causeway to Island Park.

City Council awarded a contract to AECOM Canada for detailed design and construction contract administration. It’s worth $449,000.

Transportation Committee Chair Melissa Draycott says it means some work will be done this year.

“In terms of detailed analysis of what the causeway will look like,” she says, “The causeway design includes a three-lane, low level causeway, with culvert structures, including round-abouts at the north and south intersections. And an active transportation pathway as well.”

She isn’t certain yet about how many culverts will be in place.

“What we’re asking for is detailed design services” she says, “And so that’s part of that process. We had a functional design and a detailed design come back to us before, in previous years, but the overall construction of the causeway has yet to be done.”

Draycott doesn’t expect water flow to be impacted.

The construction’s spread over three years, at a cost of $6,800,000.
