Carman Town Council wants to revisit the idea of installing a lit crosswalk near Carman Collegiate. Mayor Bob Mitchell says the group would like to meet with the new Minister of Infrastructure Blaine Pedersen, noting past efforts to have lights put up on Highway 3 weren't well received by the department.

"The issue seems to be that that it's too busy - too many off-streets, too many signs - so they thought it would just make it worse instead of better. We don't necessarily agree with them."

Bob MitchelThe Mayor says crossing guards and signage have helped make motorists aware of pedestrians in the area but Council still feels more should be done to improve student safety at that spot.

"...they have a portable sign they stick in the middle of the road at busy times (and) they have actually put up a lit speed control sign, one that measures your speed as you come through it. We tried to get them to do that before and they didn't, so we bought one of our own and now they've put their own up."

Mitchell emphasizes the fact that Carman Collegiate is on the main highway coming through town and that means there is a lot of traffic. He says there is also a lot of kids running across the highway several times during the day.
