Members of the 19 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in Portage la Prairie are fundraising for a trip to Vimy Ridge. Sixteen-year-old Gavin Doan says this year marks the 100th anniversary of the battle at Vimy Ridge, noting nobody could take the ridge until Canada came along and they did it with half the troops and in just four days. Doan says it will be a cool experience to visit the site as well as the beaches of Normandy and other places in Europe, adding cadets all across Canada are being encouraged to travel to France for this because it's such a big part of our history.

He notes the members of the cadet corps here in Portage are currently selling cash calendars to raise money for the trip. Doan says the calendars are just five bucks apiece and the cadets will pull seven names every week for cash prizes. He adds depending on which day your name is pulled, you could win a different amount of money each time---with prizes ranging from twenty bucks to two hundred dollars. Doan says the calendar sale is just one part of their campaign to raise funds for the upcoming trip.
