Voter turnout is expected to be higher than usual this September when residents of the Norfolk-Treherne municipality will vote for four new councillors.

The date for the by-election is September 4th.

The date was announced during the municipality's recent council meeting where more than a hundred people came out to speak their mind regarding the current council. Some called for the resignation of the remaining two councillors and the Reeve, while others came out to show their support. After the meeting was adjourned, an impromptu town hall was held, where residents aired some of their concerns.

People who are both for and against the current council agree this by-election will be very important.

Interim CAO for the municipality Roger Bouvier says anyone qualified may run for office.

"To be qualified to run for office, you have to pick up nomination papers, you have to be a Canadian citizen, 18 years of age as of election day, you have to be a citizen of Manitoba, and you have to be a qualified voter," says Bouvier. "A qualified voter is a person who is a resident of this municipality for at least six months, or a registered owner of land for at least six months."

Anyone interested in running has two weeks to do so.

"Nominations will open on Wednesday, July 24th at 10 a.m. and they will close on Tuesday, July 30th at 3 p.m.," says Bouvier. "So, there's five specific days, the 24th, 25th, 26th, 29th and 30th."
