A business trade show was held by Portage Collegiate last week.

The event took place on April 11th, and featured student entrepreneurs from the grade 12 business education class at PCI. Portage la Prairie School Division Assistant Superintendent Pam Garnham explains more.

"It was open to the whole community, but about 25 members were invited to come in and they were each given $10,000, fake dollars, and went around and talked to all the young entrepreneurs. It was very exciting, the students had to present their market plan, their product, their profit margin, what they felt went well for their project, what they needed to change."

She says some of the students brought their products to sell, explaining one student completely sold out of her salsa, while another pair of girls had quite a few orders for their all-natural lipstick.

Garnham notes there were plenty of local business people at the event.

"People from the Chamber [of Commerce], from Stride Credit Union, the mayor was there, PRED was there. It had a lot of business people and they had to look at the business plans with the kids and they also gave them advice so it was a really good school-community connection."

Garnham adds it was a great learning experience for the students, most of whom are going into business programs at university.
