Day one of the Rogers Hometown Hockey celebration wrapped up last night.

The outdoor celebration shut down at 6 p.m. with hundreds of people stopping by to check out all the activities despite the colder wind in the afternoon.

"I think the day went great," says Portage Regional Recreation Authority General Manager David Sattler. "The community came out and enjoyed everything that was happening. The free hot chocolate and coffee from McDonald's were greatly appreciated with the wind. We saw Paz do some magic and juggling of flaming hockey sticks which was interesting. I thought it was great."

10-year-old Hunter Schmidt said the whole day was really awesome.

"I checked out the shooting stuff and I went to the road hockey thing. I also went and got some free pizza, who doesn't want fee pizza. I was also part of the jersey reveal in the afternoon."

Former Winnipeg Jet Laurie Boschman was at the event signing autographs and meeting fans. He says it was nice to be back in Western Canada where his hockey career really got started.

"I live in Ottawa now and living in Brandon and playing junior hockey with the Wheat Kings we used to come up here to Portage to play the Terriers in Tier 2 when Andy Murray was our coach before he turned pro. My parents lived in Brandon, I spent several years in Winnipeg with the Jets so this is always nice. It's always nice to come back here, and to celebrate this great game of hockey."

The celebration continues today with things wrapping up after the Winnipeg Jets game this evening.
