A black bear cub rehabilitation facility's planned to be set up in the RM of Rockwood. Reeve Jim Campbell gives details.

"This gentleman has been approached and he's been working with Wildlife Manitoba Conservation," says Campbell. "They're in full support of it. This would be a place to rehabilitate black bear cubs and reintroduce them back into the wild."

He says TV celebrity Bob Barker's helping to fund the effort. It won't be a zoo, people won't be allowed to visit, and the bears won't be conditioned to become comfortable with humans. Campbell adds the stickler is this requires a rezoning bylaw since it's on agricultural land, and the public will be able to provide its opinion.

Campbell notes orphan cubs will be brought to the facility by the Wildlife Manitoba Conservation alone, and it will house no more than ten cubs at a time. The man behind the effort would like to start construction in June, but Campbell says that may be too soon due to the red tape that usually slows things down. The public should be able to provide its opinions by May.

As of this date, Campbell says Council has no red flags.
