While kids, and perhaps some of us older ones, dig into Easter candy treats this weekend, there are some tips to keep in mind to ensure your teeth aren't overly affected.

"Realistically most people are going to have candy once in a while," explains Brite Smile Dentist Hans Stasiuk. "It's sort of like at Hallowe'en time, right? Just don't overdo it, and be careful with the candies with the hard nuts because they can crack your teeth. You have the sugar to deal with as well as the hardness. One of the most common causes of cracked teeth is biting unpopped popcorn kernels. Another thing, too, is to try and avoid sticky or chewy candies."

Staisuk says you should always brush after eating candy. And if you're not home, at least you can swish water in your mouth and rinse. He adds you should also try to avoid sticky or chewy candy, seeing as it gets locked between your teeth and is quite hard to remove.

He adds, "I hope everybody enjoys their Easter candies and chocolates. However, at the same time remember to brush at least three times a day, floss at least once a day, and look after your teeth. If you look after your teeth you'll have them for a lifetime. It's a lot better to keep your own teeth than to have false teeth." He notes, "As the corny saying goes, 'Be true to your teeth and they'll never be false to you.' "
