The Bakr family's all settled into their home and had some guests over this weekend.

Portage's Syrian Refugee family arrived a short while ago and have slowly been getting accustomed to their new surroundings. Father Hasan says through interpreter Mostafa Skouta that he knew he had to get his family out of Syria.

"We could not find food, there was no hydro, no safety, no security. I took my family to the border with family, and I went back to Syria. I knew it wasn't safe but I tried to sell some things to have money to move. I lived alone in Syria then."

Mother Sheren says through Skouta she's is overjoyed to be in Canada.

"We are happy and really warm. Every day we have someone come to us, even though we don't speak English well we communicate. We feel the love of this community and we're thankful for that."

14-Year-Old Daughter Hanaa says that people have been incredibly welcoming at school and in the community.

"It's amazing that the kids are so nice to us and they've greeted us nicely. Everyone wants to help, everyone. (Students) don't let us feel that we're less than them, you can't imagine! Through the day at school, everyone wants to do something like give us candy, or give us something or help out, just to be friends and make us feel good."

Refugee Coalition Member John Dolloff says the evening was very emotional and it's a joy to see the family here.
