Yesterday, Portage la Prairie had the 200 Bricks barbecue fundraiser at the Co-op supermarket. Organizer Kirsten Trimble explains what it's all about.

"It's a barbecue for the 200 Bricks project which I started last year to build a school in rural Nicaragua. And the classroom will be the only high school for five different communities in Nicaragua."

She shares how the event fared partway through.

"I think we sold about 60 different hamburgers and probably about the same amount of hotdogs. So, we've done very, very well."

She compares their results from a previous barbecue.

"I know last year I did it and I raised about $500. So, I'm hoping it'll be about the same again. The project as a whole costs $10,000 to build one school. And we're already at the halfway mark. We're at $5,000. So, we're hoping between this and a garage sale at this point next summer, we'll raise the remainder."

Trimble explains if you missed the barbecue you can still donate online.

"There is a Facebook page. Type in '200 Bricks,' and there's a link on there. If you donate through that link, then you also get a tax receipt for tax time. So, that's a bonus, too, to have that write-off."
