The 18th annual La Prairie Lioness Celebrity Auction took place last night at Canad Inns in Portage la Prairie.

Heather Graham was one of the event organizers and says the turnout for the auction exceeded their expectations. She adds they even had to set up extra chairs as approximately 140 people came out to support the auction fundraiser for Central Plains Cancer Services. Graham notes they've been donating the proceeds from the auction to CPCS for the past 17 years and explains why they choose to donate year after year.

"We've always made them our charity of choice because we feel that everyone has been touched with cancer in some way. Whether it be yourself, a family member, friend or neighbour. We just feel that if we, as an organization, can help another non-profit organization raise money to make it easier for people taking that cancer journey."

Last night's auction had musical entertainment provided by local musician Ed Goertzen, Graham notes this was a first for the event but says the music was very well received and they will likely continue to have entertainment in the years to come.

Some of the items available for bid at this year's auction included crafts and quilts, resort getaways and other items donated by local businesses, Graham explains.

"Just a real variety of different items, all donated by the businesses in Portage. We can't thank Portage enough for their support year after year and [for] making this fundraiser for Central Plains Cancer Services a success."

Approximately $15,160 was raised for Central Plains Cancer Services through last night's auction.
