A curling legend from Steinbach has passed away. 60 year-old Vic Peters died Sunday in Winnipeg.

Chris Neufeld curled with Peters for 31 years including winning the Canadian Men's Championship in 1992. He says Peters was a special kind of leader.

"This first thing that comes to mind is that, basically, I think Vic made everybody a better person. He was very simple in the things that he said. He wasn't one to beat around the bush, he said it like it was. And, if you were willing to listen, you could take a lot from the things that he had to say."

Neufeld says Peters' passing at such a young age is hard to accept.

"Some things don't make any sense and this is one of them. He was so dedicated to his family. I think his family was basically his purpose. He just adored his grandchildren and they adored him and they will be lost without him for sure."

Neufeld says Peters usually appeared very relaxed but there was an intensely competitive spirit inside of him.

"He wanted to win. He wanted to be the best at whatever he did, whether it was being an ice maker, a golf course superintendent or a husband or a father or a grandfather. He took none of those responsibilities lightly and so his whole life was spent working extremely hard for his bosses and for his family."
