Portage la Prairie's Ultimate Frisbee League is all set to go tomorrow night.

Co-Organizer Julene Towes-Dewis says "Ultimate Frisbee is a team sport of 7-on-7. So there are two teams playing on a field similar size to a soccer field. Similar to football there are two end zones, and you're working with your teammates to work the frisbee down the field with the intention of catching it in the end zone. But of course, there's a defense on the other side trying to prevent you from doing that."

The league is the first of its kind to hit the city, and the organizers are excited.

"We're bringing it here for a couple of reasons," says Towes-Dewis. "One is there's traction in the province, and I know there's a number of people from Portage who drive to Winnipeg to play. so we're wanting to tap into that group of people -- and I'm one of them -- I've been driving for year's to play in Winnipeg. It's also being taught in Phys. Ed. these days so kids are really getting into the game."

The league will be running for four weeks this fall and Towes-Dewis says they're competing with daylight, which is why we have to keep it to four weeks. "We're going to be playing Wednesday night's from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Yellowquill School. Inside the track, there's a field we can use there. What we're doing is just asking people to let us know we're coming out and we'll split into two teams, and we're going to be playing against each other for the next four weeks."

You can register as either as an individual or as a group by emailing portageultimate@gmail.com, or hit them up on their Facebook page which is Ultimate in Portage la Prairie. She says they really wanted to keep the costs low for everyone who wanted to play.

"It's $15 to play, and that includes a Frisbee. We're going to be giving everyone a Frisbee so they're able to go home and practice and continue to build that love for the game. All you have to bring with you is a pair of sneakers and some athletic clothes to wear, and that's really all you need to play."

If you're new to the sport but interested in giving it a shot, they'll be holding some information sessions prior to the first couple of games. "We're going to be starting at 6 p.m." says Towes-Dewis. "So for those who are new to the game, they can come out for the first half hour and we'll be running a mini clinic where we're going to be going over Ultimate Frisbee throws and talking about the rules of the game so people have a little bit of time to learn it prior to starting."

She's looking forward to the first game tomorrow night.
