The PCI Trojans needed some extra time to beat the Garden Valley Zodiacs last night in Zone 4 High School hockey at the PCU Centre.

The Trojans jumped out to a quick 1 nothing lead seven minutes in the game, thanks to a goal from Lucas Neufeld. A minute later, Jordan Van Aert netted another one for the Trojans, giving them a 2 goal lead.

Portage sat back after that, and the Zodiacs were able to build some momentum in the second period. Garden Valley scored shortly into the 3rd period, and again with 4 minutes to go to tie the game up.

Each team was awarded a powerplay in the overtime period, and Trojans' Captain Tyson Dyck was able to pop in the game winner short handed with barely any time remaining. Trojans' GM Mark Essay says they need to stop playing to their opponents level if they plan to enjoy the post season.

"Dave (Grantham) and I have both won championships with other teams, and this is the team that could do it, but we can't do it for them. If they want to play to what's at the other end of the ice, they're going to have a tough time getting out of the first round of the playoffs. It's completely in their hands, we've got the talent. We've done it all year, we've beat every team out there, but at this rate we'll be lucky if we get out of the second round."

The Trojans are back in action today. They're in Altona to face the Aces at 8 p.m.
