A half century of golf was a reason to celebrate this past Sunday in Treherne. Former and current members gathered with people from the area to recognize the achievement and celebrate everyone who has had a hand in making it happen for five decades.

The day started with an 18 hole Par 3 scramble and current President Don Zeghers commented that the weather couldn't have been any better for the time of year. "All had a great time on the course, it was great"

The sun was shining and the course is in amazing shape.

Zegher's also addressed the crowd and was the M.C of the dinner. He acknowledged all of the volunteers throughout the years as well as business and people in Treherne and the surrounding area who have contributed to the course over the decades. The 4-Play lotto draw was also held. There were 7 different winners and Marvin Richardson of Carman was the big one taking the $10,000 prize.

The course was incorporated in 1970 and the event was actually scheduled to happen last season but the pandemic forced it to be rescheduled. The first golfers though didn't hit the fairways until 1971 so the celebration was still technically a 50th. The clubhouse started quite small with an addition added in 1978. The current clubhouse opened in 2005 and has been a popular spot for golfers and people looking for a bite to eat ever since. With the exception of one (who sent a note of congratulations) all families of the original directors had someone in attendance and that included Glen Matchett, the only surviving member of the original board and Winnifred Schewe, daughter of the original president Clarence Strong.

Glen Matchett shares some memories of how the course started and the early days.

The entire community stepped up once again to help make the event happen. With rules on gathering sizes changing multiple times throughout the season it has been another challenging one for the course. For an event of this size it was put together in a short amount of time and even though it took over a year to have an opportunity to have such an event it sold out quickly and everyone in attendance was happy to relive some of the history. Many displays were set up documenting key events and those will stay up for golfers and patrons to enjoy as the season winds down. Winning was not the purpose of the event but the team of Brian and Kim Miller along with Ray and Donna Henderson has the top score. There were also some three generation teams in Audrey Hutlet, daughter Nicky and grandchildren Ty and Raina. They golfed with another three generation family of Barb Metcalfe, son Mark, his wife Kim and daughter Julia.
