The Portage Terriers are 2-0 this MJHL pre-season, thanks to a 3-0 win in Virden last night.

The Terriers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period thanks to Ryan Hendrix's goal. Rookie Jared Roy picked up the lone assist on the play. The shots on goal after the first were 11-7 in favour of Portage.

Virden gained some life in the second -- but were a little too careless on a powerplay -- and Terriers' forward Ryan Sokoloski capitalized with a shorthanded goal to make it 2-0 with under a minute to go in the frame. Things got a little out of hand in the second, with 69 penalty minutes being handed out, including a fighting major.

The third didn't get any better with 28 penalties being handed out, 9 game misconducts, and a number of fights. Hendrix added his second of the night for Portage on the powerplay to end the scoring, and the assist went to Scott Mickoski.

Portage assistant coach Ken Brooks says things were hot right from the start, but a lot of the players are fighting for a chance to play.

"I think as the game went on things were starting to heat up a little bit. Some guys are probably fighting to find a spot on a team, so they were putting a little more into their game."

The shots on goal were 28-23 in favour of the Terriers. Brock Aiken made 13 saves while Wesley Ellingsen made 10. Brooks says despite the low number of shots, it wasn't an easy night for either goalie.

"In the first period (Aiken) kept us in that period when they had a little pressure on us. (Ellingsen) actually made some saves and had to come in and stop a penalty shot right off the bat."

Brooks adds the new players have definitely given the coaches something to thing about.

"Some guys are playing pretty hard and they're making things tough on us to make the final few decisions here, but that's the way that we want it."

The Terriers' next game is Friday in Winnipeg.
