The Portage Terriers picked up their 7th straight win last night, edging the Kings 3-1 in Dauphin. The Terriers are the only undefeated team remaining in the MJHL and are two points ahead of Virden and Swan Valley for first place.

The game started slowly with both teams trying to find their footing. Terrier defenceman Zac Patrick was making his debut playing on a pairing with Caelan McPhee. The 18-year-old started the season with the Winnipeg Ice before coming to Portage. The Terriers found the back of the net first. Midway through the period Riley Bruce planted himself in front of the net and banged home a rebound. His night would be done soon after as he dropped the gloves with Bryson MacDonald.

The Terriers extended their lead early in the second. Joey Moffatt, who took Bruce’s spot with Logan Christensen and Mack Belinski, finished off a goal mouth scramble. The Kings responded 11 minutes later. Ian Tookenay fired a shot from a sharp angle that deflected underneath Nathan Moore. Portage regained their lead on the power play. Joey Moffatt snapped a goal past the outstretched glove of Bryan Landsberger.

Penalty trouble plagued the Terriers late in the second and the beginning of the third periods. An extended five on three was killed off by some excellent saves from Moore. He finished the night with 29 and was named the games “first star”. With the net empty the Kings were able to muster a few more chances but it wasn’t enough. The Terriers penalty kill finished a perfect eight for eight.

The Terriers now have a brief rest before they travel to Virden on Sunday night to play the Oil Capitals. Puck drop is set for 7 PM.
