A familiar face is returning to the Portage Terriers — and some newer faces are on their way out.

The Terriers acquired the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) playing rights of 19-year-old forward Turner Santin, a second-round pick and future considerations from the Virden Oil Capitals in exchange for 19-year-old forwards Kirklan Lycar and Kelby Picard, the team announced today.

It was the Terriers' second move in as many days, after adding forward Brendan Kochanski in a deal with Dauphin yesterday.

“We were looking for a bit more size and grit to go along with our skilled forwards,” says Terriers head coach/GM Blake Spiller. “Both Santin and Kochanski provide that.”

Santin, a Thunder Bay, Ont., spent the 2015-16 season with the Terriers, recording 13 points (4-9—13) and 118 penalty minutes in 47 games. The six-foot-one, 165-pound winger was moved to the Soo Thunderbirds in the offseason, and appeared in three games with the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League club before being dealt to Virden in September. In 24 games with the Oil Capitals this season, Santin had five points (1-4—5) and 78 penalty minutes.

Both Lycar and Picard had brief stays with the Terriers. They were both acquired in an Oct. 25 trade with Dauphin that saw 20-year-old forwards Ashton Clark and Howard Yawit, the MJHL list rights of forward Matthew Pitchenese and future considerations head the other way.

Lycar, who had been dealing with a sports hernia, had five points (1-4—5) in six games since joining the Terriers. Picard appeared in 13 games, recording three assists and 25 penalty minutes.

Santin is expected to be in the lineup tonight, when the Terriers (18-7-0) play the Winnipeg Blues (13-12-3). Kochanski likely won't make his debut until sometime next week, as he's currently nursing a minor injury.

DEFENCEMAN RE-ASSIGNED

In wake of the Dec. 1 deadline for CJHL teams to have rosters trimmed to 25 players, the Terriers announced Portage la Prairie blueliner Lane Taylor has been re-assigned to the Central Plains Capitals of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League.

“Taylor played well for us with the long stretch of injuries and really improved with the extra ice time,” Spiller explains. “(He) will help the Caps' team, as well as be an important call up for us as needed.”
