A captain's effort, and a little luck, led the Portage Terriers to a 2-1 victory over the Winkler Flyers tonight at the PCU Centre.

It was a battle between the top two teams in the MJHL, as the Terriers went into the game with a 7 point lead on the Flyers. The Terriers came on strong in the first, but were unable to crack the Flyers' netminder in the period.

The score was tied at 0 for most of the period -- when the Terriers ran into some penalty trouble -- and Flyers' forward Thomas Mansbridge scored to give them a 1 goal lead heading into the final frame.

The Flyers celebrate the opening goal of the game

Terriers' captain Brad Bowles was given a 10 minute unsportsmanlike penalty in the second period -- and played a big role in the 3rd -- as he scored to tie things at 1 shortly after getting out of the box. Bowles continued to lead his team, as he scored another shortly after to give the Dogs the lead. The Flyers pushed back before the end of the game, but Terriers' goalie Nathan Park held out for the win.

The Terriers next game is Saturday when they host the Steinbach Pistons at the PCU Centre.
