The Portage Skating Club held their Annual General Meeting earlier this week at the PCU Centre.

President Shawn Cabak says 2015 was a positive year for the skating club.

"We had a very successful year. With our number of skaters in our programs, we were able to grow the participation in our CanSkate, Star Skate, and Group Skate programs and by holding a number of special events including our Star Skate seminar, the Crocus Synchronized competition in March, and our Regional's in January, we were able to return some profits to the club."

Cabak notes although the number of older skaters has noticed a decline, there are still a lot of skaters in the program.

"There's always a transition as skaters graduate and move on to other endeavours. We've had a strong youth movement in the last couple of years, so we have a lot of young skaters in the Star Skate program which is what we like to see, and they'll continue to skate and be a part of the club."

He notes one of the highlights of the meeting.

The Gold Crystals are handed out to skaters who achieve one of the highest levels that they can in their test, and the Portage Skating Club recognizes that achievement. We even had 2 skaters that achieved quad Gold Crystals today which is an outstanding accomplishment that doesn't happen everyday and it doesn't happen to a lot of skaters."

Cabak would like to thank all of the Portage Skating Club board members who volunteer their time for the betterment of the kids in the skating programs, as well as all of the parents and skaters involved in the organization.
