Westpark Royals junior varsity girls basketball team owns some hardware, after this weekend's A/AA provincial championship in Gimli.

They won a silver medal, after falling 74-39 to Warren Wildcats on Saturday.

Coach Brian Brewer says it was a tight game in the first half.

"We actually closed to within 8 in the second. They had a real strong 12-man team, so we kind of ran out of steam, but the girls never gave up, and they played really hard, so we're proud of our second place finish, and our silver medal."

Brewer describes this year as incredible.

"I told them at Westpark, we've only had a J-V team for three years, and we've won two zone championships, been to provincials twice, and come home with a runner-up banner and a silver medal, so I told them they're one of the best teams I've ever been involved with."

Warren's Olivia McCowan was named the tournament MVP. Westpark's Jada Wieler and Keely Chiponski were one of five tournament all-stars. Warren's Alex Chester was also named to that squad.
