A roller derby boot camp was held yesterday at the Canad Inns curling rink in Portage la Prairie.

Tina Jansen, a.k.a. Girlmeat, is a Winnipeg Roller Derby All-Star skater and the Chair of Training for the Winnipeg Roller Derby League. She explains more about yesterday's boot camp.

"This is our second year running it. We just kind of try to teach some of the smaller leagues in our area about some of the new strategies and skills that we are playing at the highest level. We try to share them with our surrounding area to help them with their upcoming seasons."

She notes last year's boot camp was held in Winnipeg but Portage was chosen this year as it's a more central location and it further promotes the sport in our community.

Skaters from around Manitoba, and even some from Saskatchewan and Ontario, came out for the boot camp. The skaters ranged in age from junior, 9-17 years, to adult.
