The Portage Sea Lions Aquatic Swim Club's at Winnipeg's Pan-Am Pool this weekend for the junior provincial championships. The event began last night.

Tiah Snaith's one of the competitors, and has participated for the last two years. She's in a number of events, including the 100 metre breaststroke and the 50 metre backstroke. Snaith says this year, she has a specific goal she'd like to achieve.

"Last year, I won a gold medal in my 50 freestyle, and the provincials after that -- because there are usually two or three a year --  I didn't get a gold medal in that one, so I'm going to try and get  first in my heat, and maybe top three in that event."

Chase Yanke's taking part, too, and also has his eye on one event.

"I really want to try to go for a gold medal in 100 breaststroke. The last meet I went to, I got first in it, and I want to keep the streak going with that race, and maybe make Man-Sask with it."

Sea Lions' coach Pearl Tymchuk says the club's mandate is development, because they're a fairly young club.

"Even making to junior provincials has been awesome, so this is kind of an added bonus. So, just going into the meet, basically do their best, and get their best personal times. They've been working really hard over the past few months, and now they get to see all their hard work pretty much play out over the weekend."

The junior provincials wrap up tomorrow.
