The Portage Collegiate Institute (PCI) Saints are through to the Manitoba High School Athletics Association (MHSAA) fastpitch Zone 4 finals.

Shayne Nichols had four RBIs and also pitched one shutout inning, as the Saints slammed the Sanford Sabres 15-0 Monday afternoon at Republic Park in Portage la Prairie.

“I think our offence is always good and solid. We always have good bats,” Nichols said. “Our defence did really well today, we didn't have any errors. So that's really good.”

Kassidy Cunningham struck out three in two scoreless innings of work. Natanish Wall and Maddie Shwaluk each added two RBIs.

After two batters quickly recorded outs, the Saints rallied to score four runs in the first inning and then added 11 runs in the second to dispatch Sanford in just three innings per league mercy rules.

“We're almost just as happy with cleaning things up defensively as we were with the outburst of runs,” said Saints coach Cam Asham. “But the girls did a good job with the rally there in the first inning after the first two batters making outs.”

The Saints completed an undefeated regular season and head to next week's Zone 4 playoffs as the No. 1 seed. The field will round out Wednesday with Zone 4 Division A/B crossover games, with the No. 2 and No. 3 seed from each playing for a spot in the Zone 4 finals next week.

“We're just looking forward to getting a few practices in and looking forward to next Wednesday,” Asham added.
