Portage Islanders are a win away from the SEMHL semi-finals, after a 6-5 come from behind overtime victory over Winkler Royals yesterday. The game was in Winkler.

The Royals struck first, gaining a 2-0 lead before the first period was 12 minutes old.

The Islanders responded with two of their own, from AJ Spiller and Anders Strome, with his first of two, and the teams went to the dressing room tied 2-all.

In the second period, the teams traded goals again, with the Royals taking a 3-2 lead 42 seconds in, followed by Tanner Waldvogel getting the equalizer. The Royals then went ahead 4-3, but Landon Thompson got the Isles back on even terms. Winkler scored again, making it 5-4, and the remaining 9 and a half minutes were scoreless.

Anders Strome scored the only goal in the third period, at 11:23, which the sent the game into overtime.

That's when Stan Yanchysin scored the winner, with 30 seconds left in the extra frame.

The Islanders have a 2-1 best of 5 quarter-final series lead, and can advance to the semis with a victory Friday night, in Portage.
