The Prairie Fire U14 Black girl's volleyball team took the gold medal in the Division 1 Tier 2 National Championships held in Winnipeg over the weekend.

The Prairie Fire went 2-1 on Friday, which sent them down to Tier 2 for the rest of the weekend. Head Coach Debbie Moffat says the girls completely turned it around the next day.

"They were pretty disappointed in themselves, so they came back with a whole new attitude on Saturday, and they brought their A game. They brought their skill, they brought their emotion and control, and they played so smart."

After Friday's loss the Prairie fire needed to go undefeated the rest of the weekend to finish in the top 10, which was their goal heading into the tournament. Moffat says they did just that, all the way to the Tier 2 final -- where they met Winnipeg's Vision Blue -- the team that eliminated them from the Provincial Championship in Winnipeg.

"We had a little bit of revenge on our mind, and a little bounce in our step, and we were able to take them down in 2 sets. With that win, we earned 9th place out of all the Western Provinces."

She says it was an honour to coach such a special group of players.

"They were so coachable. They were just like sponges, whatever you threw at them, they just soaked it in -- thought about it -- and they just took off from there. Their confidence grew through the year, their skill grew through the year, and their character grew through the year."

The Prairie Fire U-17 team also captured some hardwared earlier this month. They won the bronze at the Division 2 Tier I event at the 17U/18U Volleyball Canada Club Championships May 5-8 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Prairie Fire defeated British Colombia's Kodiaks 25-13, 25-17 in the bronze medal match.
