Congratulations to Kristen Peterson of Portage la Prairie.

Peterson took part in Sunday's Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service half-marathon in Winnipeg. She not only competed, she came in second place for females, first in her age class, and 10th overall! She ran in the 5K event and says there are different stages she'll go through during a race.

"The first part is like, okay I can do this. I can finish this race, I've done it before, I can do it I can create a new best. Then by around the 3-kilometer mark, I'm like, I'm so tired!"

Peterson says she started off by walking in her first event and hasn't looked back. She says it's a pretty steady training plan.

"My method of training is that I've mapped out a 3K route by myself. So I do that, but I also play ringette and school volleyball."

She says at the start of the race she had to pass some people, and passed another group after the pack had leveled out, then she was far out front and on her own. She adds, "I'd never be able to do it without music," she laughs. "I need it."

She plans to continue competing in marathons. There are more pictures below.
