It's even better the second time around!

The Portage Terriers are the MJHL's Turnbull Cup Champions for the second year in a row. They finished off the Steinbach Pistons in 5 games with last night's 5-1 victory in Portage, in front of all their fans at the PCU Centre.

The Terriers got things going toward the end of the first with a deflection goal from Braydon MacDonald. The shot came from Cody Haiskenen, and Brad Bowles picked up an assist on the play as well. Steinbach had a few chances in the period, but were limited to only 6 shots through the first 20.

MacDonald celebrates his goal to open the scoring. There's a video of this goal below.

The dogs continued to mount their offensive attack in the second. Terriers' forwards Chase Brakel and Adam Wowryk each netted goals after the 10 minute mark, increasing their lead to 3. Again the Pistons were held to just 6 shots in the frame.

With the Turnbull Cup only 20 minutes away, the Portage Terriers never looked back. Brandon Stanley scored to make it 4-0 Portage near the 11 minute mark of the 3rd. The Pistons finally got on the board with just under 5 minutes to go, but it was already too little too late. Brakel would add another one for the dogs with the Pistons' net empty. As time expired, the Terriers rushed to goalie Nathan Park -- who made 20 saves in the win -- to celebrate the victory.

Terriers' Captain Brad Bowles says "It's actually an unbelievable feeling right now. We were expected to do nothing this year, and to come out and win a championship again, it's an unbelievable feeling." Bowles finished the playoffs with 7 goals and 17 assists, and 102 points during the regular season. He was also named the playoff MVP, while Terriers' goalie Nathan Park was selected Top Goalie.

Assistant Captain Brett Orr was pleased they could celebrate with all their fans on home ice.

"It means the world to me. The fans here, and my family, they care so much about us and the whole team. Their commitment to us hasn't wavered all year. We're doing it for them too, we wouldn't be here without them."

The Terriers went 12-1 through this year's playoffs, just shy of going undefeated for two straight years in the post season. Defenseman Dean Stewart is from Portage la Prairie, and says they can enjoy the moment for now.

"It's unbelievable. This is what you play hockey for is to win championships. Obviously the job's not done yet, but it's pretty surreal right now."

The 2015-16 Portage Terriers and the Turnbull Cup

Portage rookie Jeremy Leipsic was an offensive force for the Terriers, contributing on most of the Terriers' goals throughout the series. Leipsic gives his thoughts on why he was able to be so successful this series.

"I think just all using our speed to our advantage, we're all pretty quick guys and I think once we start moving our feet it works to our advantage, and I think that worked pretty well for us this series."

The Terriers next challenge is to capture the 2016 Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup, a feat last year's team couldn't accomplish. They finished as runners up after losing to the Penticton Vees in the final. The tournament goes April 30th in Estevan Saskatchewan.
