Former Portage Skating Club skater Melissa Butler won gold with her University of Manitoba team at the Manitoba Crocus Invitational Synchronized Skating Competition at the PCU Centre Saturday.

Over 23 teams took part in the event, with more than 200 skaters competing. Butler says it was a pretty special victory.

Former Portage Skating Club Skater Melissa Butler and her gold medal

"It feels pretty good. It was nice to come back to my home rink and show what I've done for the last couple of years with my skating career. So it feels really good to get that medal."

Butler talks about their gold medal performance.

"We had a couple of issues, but we fought through. It's been a long season, and we've accomplished a lot. So to come here with all the changes that we've made -- and an injured skater -- it was nice to work through the entire routine as a group."

It was the first time the Portage Skating Club's hosted this event.
