Defending champion Portage FC will once again be playing in the upcoming Golden Boy Indoor Soccer Tournament.

The Portage boys participated in the tournament, put on by the Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association, last year and came in first place. Coach Ian Currie says they had an excellent Golden Boy last year and explains they're aiming for a repeat performance.

"We're going into it hoping to do well. I always tell the boys that you can never expect to win, you just have to do your best, try your hardest during every game, and that usually ends up serving us well."

Currie notes the team has been practicing different kicks and drills to increase their edge in the tournament.

Portage FC's goalie, Rodrigo Rodriguez, played on the team last year and says he's excited to be returning to the tournament. He adds he's hopeful for another win.

Coach Currie shares the enthusiasm.

"I think it's going to be a great tournament. A lot of the top teams are in it so it's going to be a strong competition and great for the boys. [A] good experience."

Portage takes to the field in their first game of the tournament Thursday night when they face VGCC U15 Pauls. Game time is 8:00 p.m. in Winnipeg.
