Defense wasn't a priority last night in Selkirk as the Portage Terriers beat the Steelers in a wild one 7-6. The scoring started in the first 5 minutes of the game and didn't let up. Selkirk got on the board with Nathan Halvorsen snapping one home, and Jake Dudar following it up 16 seconds later. Selkirk would add to their lead on the power play when Dallas Starodub tucked home the puck at the side of the net.

The Portage Terriers would start to show signs of life minutes later when assistant captain Chase Brakel used the man advantage to find the back of the net. Momentum would swing toward Portage as Ryan Sokoloski forced a turnover and scored on a partial break. The Terriers wouldn't be done there, as Jeremey Leipsic received a nice pass in front of the net and tied the game at 3. The 3 Terrier goals in the first period were scored less than 2.5 minutes apart.

In the second frame, Selkirk regained their lead with three more goals, the first two in quick succession. They came from Jake Dudar, Ryan Pruden, and Riley Giauque. After the 5th goal, Brock Aiken was pulled from the Terrier net; he let in 5 goals on 23 shots. Wesley Ellingsen took over between the pipes and let in a goal on the first shot he faced. He would be perfect the rest of the night, stopping 17 of 18 shots. Just like the first period, the Terriers didn't back down from a three-goal deficit but started to slowly claw their way back into the game.

A 5-minute major penalty to Blake DaSilva of Selkirk lead to Portage's Chase Brakel scoring his second of the night, and Calvin Bliid scoring his first as a Terrier on the power play. After the goal from Bliid, the Steelers pulled netminder Hayden Dola, who had let in 5 goals on 16 shots, for backup Brett Friesen. The Terriers would continue to pour on the pressure in the third period, notching goals from Jordan Thomson, and another from Leipsic. The Terriers have now won 3 in a row and improve to 5-1 on the season.

Portage finishes off the home and home series with Selkirk tonight at the PCU Centre starting at 7:30pm. It will be the special purple game for Central Plains Cancer Services, so the ice and Terrier jerseys will be purple. Details on the purple game can be found here.
