The Peewee Rural AA Hockey Provincial Championships came to an end yesternday afternoon with Portage Terriers taking the gold medal, 10-4 against Winkler on home ice. Portage coach Kelly Funk recaps the season.

"It's very exciting. We had a goal at the beginning of the year and entered a league that was way better than we were. We won five games in the league all year but our goal was to work towards being here Sunday for a medal."

Funk says the season and tournament were full of high and low points, with a lot of good comebacks for his team. He notes it was a great experience to be able to focus on coaching while others took the helm of hosting the tournament.

"Melanie Ferg, our host committee person did an unbelievable job. We have a top notch facility, we have great hotels and a great community. We must have had a couple hundred people out here tonight. Absolutely this was the best run tournament we have had in a long time. It was really nice for our team and our coaching staff to not have to worry about anything."

Funk notes their team did a great job of taking the lead in the third period, adding it's all thanks to a lot of hard work on the players end, as well as a great pep talk off the ice.
