The Zone Four Highschool Boys Baseball title belongs to the Portage Collegiate Trojans after doubling the W.C. Miller Aces 6-3 in the championship game Friday afternoon.

"There was lots of excitement. We worked all year for this and it finally paid off," said Portage centre fielder Matt Boychuck. "It was good for the senior to get a win in his last tournament here."

The Trojans got to the final after dumping the Morden Thunder 9-5, and the Aces shutout the Provincial host Garden Valley 2-0.

After a scoreless first inning the Trojans capitalized on a walk to bring home their first run of the ball game. Portage then went on to score at least one run in each of the subsequent innings. Altona gave up two in the third, one in the fourth, fifth, and sixth.

"We've shown a lot of character this year. We've had some pretty good pitching performances and we knew that our guys were going to bring it today," said Aces Manager Jeff Andrews. "Were happy with the way everybody played and we can hang our hat on the fact that we went out the way we wanted to. We never quit and continued to battle and the future is bright for our program."

It seemed to be a matter of the Trojans at-bats ended up finding a green patch, while the Aces at-bats found the leather of a Portage glove.

"That's the game of baseball for you. That's just the way it goes. It definitely played a factor in the game," said Miller short-stop Jayden Bergen.

The Aces tallied once in their half of the fourth and put together one last push to try and take the lead in the seventh, but was only able to bring two more runs across the plate.

Southpaw Dawson Rempel go the start on the bump for the Aces and tossed three innings, and allowed three runs on three hits, struck out three, and walked four batters. Kirby Sawatzky came in and pitched the final three innings, giving up three runs on five hits, while striking out one.

Meanwhile, Jason Brooks got the start for the Trojans and tossed six and a third innings of three hit ball, struck out two batters, before Chance Dickersen recorded the final two outs for Portage to win the zone banner.

The Trojans will represent Zone Four along with the host Garden Valley Zodiacs at Provincials next week in Winkler.

"Just good defence, doing the little things right, getting good reads off of pitchers, stealing bags, and move runners around. It's all pretty important," said Brooks when asked about provincials.
