The Central Region's lead at the Powersmart Manitoba Summer Games has dwindled after a long day of swimming on day 5.

Central still leads with 80 medals, 35 gold, 22 silver, and 23 bronze. Winnipeg Blue and Winnipeg Gold stormed ahead today thanks to a load of medals earned in the water and are tied for second with 76 medals. Interlake's in 4th with 60.

The Central Region Girl's softball team went 2-0 yesterday. They knocked off Eastman 8-1 in the morning and then took Parkland 8-1 as well in the evening. Central and Parkland were tied at 1 after the second inning, but that's when Central ran away with it. Head Coach Trevor Shwaluk says Parkland came ready to play.

"Parkland is a feisty team. They were pretty excited to get a run against us and to get something early, they're scrappy. So we had to stay patient until about the 3rd inning, that's when we started to have an explosion."

Despite Central's lack of practices and a short bus ride, Shwaluk says the girls have really come together as a club.

"We're playing together as a team which is nice. We're getting contributions from everybody, it's not just one or two players, it's everyone through the line-up. So our depth has really been helping us in these first two games."

Central's back on the field today at 9 a.m. against Westman.

It was an okay day for the Central Region's soccer teams on the pitch. The boys are 2-0, while the girls went 1-1. The girls lost their first match of the tournament to Eastman 4-nothing but picked up a 2-1 win over Winnipeg Gold last night. The boys won their opening match 4-0 over Winnipeg Gold and 3-0 over Parkland. The girls go at 9 a.m. The boys are at 1 p.m.

The Central Region split their day on the volleyball court, as both the boy's and girl's teams went 1-1. The boys fell 2-0 to Winnipeg Blue in the morning, then bounced back with a 2-0 win over Parkland. The girls won their first match of the tournament in 3 sets over Westman, then fell 2-1 to Winnipeg in a very exciting match. Central Girl's Head Coach Debbie Moffat really liked what she saw from her team in the loss.

"There were so many more positives than negatives even though it was a loss. It was a hard fought match, we left everything on the floor, and I couldn't ask for anything more from my players. So proud of them."

Moffat says the game against Winnipeg was one of the most amazing things she's experienced.

"It was a huge display in front of one of the largest crowds I've seen at the volleyball venue so far. We had several Central Region teams that come and watch us play, that (the girls) have made friends with at the village."

The Central boys and girls go today at 11 a.m. The boys face Winnipeg Gold, the girls are up against Parkland.
