Ecole Arthur Meighen School's Grade 7 and 8 Girls and Boys basketball teams are the City of Portage Basketball Champions.

The EAMS Girls won their Championship on Tuesday night, defeating LVS 31-20. EAMS' Grade 8 player Alyssa McLeod says the younger players were really excited to win, and credits the win to good coaching.

"Well my dad's the coach, and he taught us at the start of the year -- this offense -- you pass the ball and cut, and that helps us score a lot, and to try and confuse the other team. We just seemed to get our shots in a lot more from the start of the year to now. I think we just played really good."

It's the second year in a row that EAMS boys won the championship. They defeated LVS 25-20 on Wednesday, and Grade 8 player Joseph McEwing was part of both championship teams. He was on the court for the last 5 minutes of the game, and says they were out there to win it.

"Our coach was pulling a lot of time-outs to get us organized and calm us down a bit. But the whole team was really focused, and wanted to win this game."

McLeod and McEwing are both looking forward to playing junior varsity basketball next year.
