Manitoba Amateur Bodybuilding Provincial Championships are this weekend in Winnipeg.

Bodybuilder Bailey Green from Portage la Prairie's competing in the Men's Physique Championship at Pantages Playhouse. Green had to place in the top 5 to be able to attend the event, and his 3rd place in 2015 was good enough to make the cut. Green says his previous year went a lot smoother because he stayed in shape over the off season.

"I ended up putting on 50 pounds in the off season, and gaining 20 pounds of muscle. So I'll be 20 pounds heavier on stage this year, but I also gained 30 pounds of fat. So it was really, really tough this year. It definitely took its toll on me."

19-year-old Green's been lifting weights since he was 13, but only recently started doing it for competitive reasons. He outlines a day on his training schedule.

"3 times a day. Cardio in the morning, then you need to go to the gym after work, then cardio right before bed again. Also the low carbs, and constantly your diet is getting changed."

Green says one of the toughest things about competing is the lack of a social life, "When you want to go hang out with friends and you can't because you're on a diet, or they want to go out and have a couple of drinks -- or go to McDonalds or something like that -- I have to say no every time."

He says nothing compares to the feeling you get stepping on stage.

"It's almost like an adrenaline rush, well it is an adrenaline rush. It's just wicked, when they call your name and you go out one at a time. It just makes everything you've done the past 4 months worth it."

The competition goes on Saturday, with pre-judging at 9 a.m.
