Hundreds turned out for the Kids Of Steel Wind-Up Triathlon in Portage la Prairie Sunday.

The Portage Junk Yard Dogs hosted the event. Organizer Chris Kitchen says they had over 100 athletes participating, and close to 250 people took in the event from all around Manitoba. Kitchen says it was a really special race for a lot of the competitors.

"It's particularly exciting because this is the first major race after the Manitoba Summer Games had finished. So a lot of the kids were really pumped up from the games and they wanted to keep things going. So it was good to be able to host a bunch of their friends, and people they competed with at those games."

Kitchen says the Kids of Steel Wind-up Race is one of the more popular races in the province.

"We've been doing this in Portage for the past couple of years, but I would have to say it's one of the better well attended events because of our centralized location. Also, the kids love the pool swims in the race, it just makes it a lot faster of a race."

He adds this is the final event of the season, and they're looking forward to next year.
