The Portage Islanders won in dramatic fashion at the PCU Centre last night, when they beat the Notre Dame Hawks 3-2 in OT in South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League action. The win came on Braden Pettinger Charity Night.

The game started off physical and remained that way throughout. At the halfway mark of the 1st period the hawks opened up the scoring. 6 minutes later, the Hawks took a penalty which proved to be costly as Tanner Waldvogel scored on the Islanders powerplay to tie the game at 1.

Both teams battled hard in the 2nd period but no goals were scored.

The Islanders would strike first in the 3rd period when Landon Thomson sniped a goal past the Hawks goaltender to take a 2-1 lead at the 10 minute mark of the 3rd. The game went back and forth for the rest of the period and both teams had plenty of scoring chances. With just over 2 minutes left in the game, the Hawks scored on a tip-in goal to even the game at 2, sending the game to OT.

The Islanders wasted no time in the extra frame as Tanner Waldvogel picked up his 2nd goal of the night on a wraparound just 46 seconds in to secure the win for the Islanders. Jesse Deckert got the win in net for the Islanders.

Waldvogel talks about his goals and recaps the game.

"It's always nice being able to help out the team...I was just lucky enough to get a couple easy ones to go in for me and everyone worked pretty hard. It was a battle...both sides kind of struggled at times and it was hard fought right to the end so it was nice to get the win."

The Islanders' 50/50 earnings from last night's game will go to Braden Pettinger and his family.
