The Portage Islanders are on a winning streak in the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League thanks to their 8-3 win over Warren at the PCU Centre yesterday afternoon.

The teams exchanged goals to start the first period, Anders Strome scored for the Islanders, while Jared Walker picked up the goal for Warren. After that it was all Portage, as Doug Lawrence and Eric Delong each netted goals later in the first, while Strome netted 2 more for the hat trick before the end of the second period.

The Islanders' Delong and Lawrence each netted their second of the night in the 3rd period, while Jeremy Brooks also popped one in late in the third period. Wade Duncan and Jared Walker were Warren's third period goal scorers.

Islanders' Doug Lawrence had 2 goals and an assist on the night, he talks about last night's game and their recent success.

"Yeah, I think it was one of the longest games ever," he laughs. "We just talked on the bench and kept our heads about us. The team's starting to get more chemistry and we're starting to play better. It took a couple games to really get used to each other, now we're starting to get clicking as a team."

Lawrence gives his thoughts on why the team's turned it around of late.

"Doing the little things right, getting pucks low on net, grabbing the back checkers, little things like that. Making it easier on the defense and the goalie, and everything else. It's a new league for a lot of guys, some guys didn't play for a long time, everyone's coming back and slowly getting into it, and it's slowly starting to work for us now."

The Islanders are off until Saturday when they host Notre Dame at the PCU Centre.
