The Headstone Honeys fell 171-169 to the Gapland Rollers in their home opener at the Portage Curling Club yesterday.

The Honeys were down by 23 heading into the second half, but rallied for a 10 point lead heading into the final jam of the night. Unfortunately, Gapland's strong Jammer was able to score 15 points to the Honeys' 3, sealing a Gapland victory.

Honeys' Jammer Venus N D Skies played a big part in their second half comeback, and talks about what changed.

"We formed well together, and we started talking a little bit more. Me personally, I found my jammer legs, it took me a few round of getting held back to figure out how I needed to get around, and I just kept moving my feet."

Honey's Jammer Cassandra Wild says a 20 point deficit isn't a very big league by derby standards.

"You know, 20 points in roller derby isn't really a big difference because you can get a power jam, and you can get 15. I've seen somebody get a 40 point jam."

She says there were a lot of new faces on the track, making for an interesting game.

"Our team, and their team, did really well meshing people from different leagues. Working with what they had, that's why it was so close."

The Honeys also had a presentation at Half Time where they presented Habitat for Humanity Wood Buffalo with a cheque for $1000 to help those in Fort McMurray. The Honey's next home game is July 16th at the Portage Curling Club.
