The Central Plains Capitals have finally done something they haven't been able to accomplish in 5 Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League seasons.

They knocked off the Winnipeg Wild 3-2 in a shootout at the PCU Centre last night. The Caps found themselves down 2-0 after the first period, but they cut lead in half thanks to a Joey Moffat goal 1 minute into the second. Caps' forward Jaxon Blight would tie the game up at 2 seven minutes later, with Tyler Van Deynze and Logan Calder picking up assists on the play.

Joey Moffat heading toward the net

The Caps switched their play in the third to a more defensive style which kept most of the shots to the outside allowing goaltender Riley Sveistrup to make the easy saves and keep it deadlocked at two. A five minute overtime period solved nothing so the teams set up for a shootout.

Caps' forward Joey Moffat shot first and scored bottom glove to give the Caps a 1-0 lead. The next 3 shooters all missed their opportunities, including Caps' forward Dawson Braun. Central Plains' final shooter was Logan Calder and he made no mistake going high glove, sending the water bottle flying in the process.

"It really depends on how the ice is," says Caps' Logan Calder when asked if he had a plan heading into the shootout. "I saw (Moffat) and (Braun) both shoot before me, so I thought the ice would be bad and I might as well try a shot. Luckily it worked for me, I thought I missed," he laughs.

A Wild goal was disallowed in the 3rd after the net came off

Caps' Jayson Brooks and Dawson Braun also picked up assists in the game. The entire team was ecstatic to finally take down the Wild, especially on home ice. Caps' Jared Hulme explains the significance of the win for the organization.

"It's unreal. Someone in the dressing room said it hasn't happened in 5 years so it's pretty incredible. We seem to be really clicking as a team and it's just working well for us."

Jaxon Blight in his own zone

Riley Sveistrup made a lot of saves in this one, 45 to be exact. Caps' 16-Year-Old forward Jaxon Blight says they're all buying in and it shows on the ice.

"The systems the coaches are giving us are working. Everyone is battling hard, and making good passes out there."

The Caps next game is Saturday when they host Parkland at the PCU Centre. Puck drop is 3:45 p.m.
