The Central Plains Capitals took a 1-0 series lead in their best-of-5 Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League Semi Final, thanks to a 4-2 win over Pembina Valley last night.

The Caps and Hawks exchanged goals through the 1st and 2nd periods, with Caps' goals coming from Sheridan Oswald and Mekaela Fisher. Central Plains managed to gain the lead in the third though, as Oswald netted her second of the night. Caps' forward Emily Upgang scored an empty net goal to seal the win.

Caps' forward Sheridan Oswald talks about her game winner.

"I started off in our end and we made a really good play to get it out and I was just lucky to get the goal. I was actually looking to see if there was a pass -- and I decided better not -- just shot it and it went in," laughs Oswald.

Central Plains' Head Coach Ferdi Nelissen was impressed with their final period.

"Going into the 3rd period 2-2, they scored a late goal -- a big goal for them -- and our girls looked a little deflated. We talked in between periods -- and give them credit -- they came out. I thought the ebb and flow of the 3rd period was good, we didn't give up much in our own end. When our goalie had to be big she was, and it's a huge road win for us."

Game 2 is Saturday at the BDO Centre, with puck drop at 4 p.m.
