The Central Plains Capitals lost a nail-biter last night in Shoal Lake, as they fell 2-1 in double overtime to the Yellowhead Chiefs in game 1 of the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League final.

After a scoreless first period, the Chiefs took a 1-0 lead early in the 2nd. The Caps fought hard for the rest of the period and were rewarded with a late goal by Sheridan Oswald to tie the game at 1 heading into the 3rd period.

Neither team was able to score, sending the game to overtime.

After over 20 minutes of extra time, the Chiefs were awarded a questionable penalty shot, when a Caps player covered the puck in the corner, and Yellowhead scored to win game 1 of the best-of-5 series.

Capitals' head coach Ferdi Nelissen says his team played very well.

"We played an excellent hockey game. We had good goaltending, we moved the puck well, we had more chances than them, our girls competed hard, and it was an excellent hockey game. I'll tell you if we play like that for the whole series, we have a chance to win it. It was and outstanding effort by our girls and Mckenna wild was excellent in net."

Nelissen is protesting the result of the game with the league.

Game 2 is tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the PCU Centre, as the Caps look to even the series.
