The Portage Golf Club's Annual General Meeting was this week.

Outgoing President Preston Meier says they still continue to see a decline in membership, but their green fees actually made up for the loss financially. Meier explains a couple of ways they plan to address the membership issue.

"We tried to keep membership fees reasonable, in fact this year we did not have a membership increase. The second thing we do now is we have a payment plan that we put into effect."

Meier says the decline in membership isn't exclusive to the Portage Golf Club.

"Fortunately it's not just our issue. We do find that talking to some other clubs around that every club is experiencing the same thing. Whether it be to attrition, or due to cost."

Meier says one of the biggest things they've accomplished is the all around improvement of the course.

"The course is in excellent condition, and we had a Superintendent get educated to making it -- hopefully -- one of the premier courses in Manitoba."

A couple of big projects from 2015 were the building of their new storage shed, along with a speaker system to help with tournaments and atmosphere. Overall it was a productive year for the Club according Meier, who says there's a few things to look forward to.

"Our tournaments were up, so we really take that as a good sign that Portage has become a destination. I really want to encourage even non-golfers to come out and check out the deck and the facilities. It is one of the best places in Portage to be."

The Portage Golf Club's opening day is Friday.
