Aaron Pierre, the Indigenous Community Coordinator with the Portage Community Revitalization Corporation (PCRC), was thrilled to see such an excellent turnout for last weekend's Indigenous-based event. It may have been raining last Saturday, but that didn't keep the PCRC from holding an event to showcase the new welcome sign on the side of Red River College Polytech in Portage la Prairie. Pierre says that the event saw 130 people come and attend an afternoon full of Indigenous activities. "Usually, the rain keeps people away, but we had a pretty good turnout." According to Pierre, the three languages presented on the sign are Ojibway, Michif and Dakota, with multiple words in each language welcoming the community. Knowledge Holder Darryl Taylor shared some words at the event while the lady drum group sang a song about the Indigenous Welcome Billboard to unveil the sign. "I feel like it was pretty well received," continues Pierre. "It was a great opportunity to network with our community members and external partners. It just happened so organically. It was a really good event for connecting, networking, and sharing information." Pierre notes that the PCRC is thankful for everyone who attended and made the day possible.
