The sun may have been shining during Saturday's 5k Family Fun Walk/Run, but Portage la Prairie residents made it rain $1115 for the Family Resource Centre.

Grade 12 Student Paige McCulloch, also the city's Youth Councillor, set up the event with a group of classmates as a part of their final project for a Global Issues class.

"The idea was to get some people in our community to come out and have a good day and raise some money for the Family Resource Centre. Overall, we think it went pretty well."

McCulloch, who won't be in Portage next year as she heads down Highway 1 to pursue a Law Degree at the University of Manitoba, says it is nice to leave a legacy behind.

"It's really great to be able to look back and see that I did make a change in the community, and I was able to help people when I was given the opportunity as being Youth Councillor."

Melissa Morrison, Executive Director of the Family Resource Centre, explains that this donation will go a long way to help out youth programming.

"It's awesome that youth are invested in their community and that they want to give back, especially to places who are looking to grow and support youth more in this community. It's really full circle."

The walk started at 10 a.m. on June 3, and 38 participants took part in the 5k exercise.
