The City of Portage la Prairie has decided to award the yet-to-be-constructed daycare building to Wee World Day Care.

City Council voted on this decision on March 27th during their City Council meeting, and councillor Ryan Espey says there was only a slight edge between the two daycares in the running, those being Wee World Day Care and Portage Day Care.

“When we put out a request for proposal, the scoring system is shared and everything is assigned a point value and they're scored side by side,” explains Espey. “In this case, two came back and Wee World Day Care came out slightly on top.”

Espey mentions that the proposal process began just before the holidays last year, which means that this process went faster than their usual requests.

He says that, while there isn’t a set date for the construction to be completed at the current moment, more information will become known as additional permits are approved. One thing that Wee World Day Care will get to look forward to, however, is 15 years of using the facility rent-free.

“This was a government program that rolled out that actually looked at daycare spaces across Manitoba,” notes Espey. “That's what was offered to all of these communities.”

The next city council meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 12th.
