Canadas transportation watchdog is advocating for changes after investigating a case involving two CN freight trains that collided just east of Portage la Prairie three years ago.

During the incident, crew members reportedly jumped off their trains just before eight cars and two locomotives fell off the rails leaving only minor injuries and no fatalities. Fuel was also reported to be leaking after the collision but was contained before further damage could be caused.

With that in mind, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) held a press conference on Wednesday in Winnipeg, releasing what they had uncovered from the investigation since the collision took place on January 3rd, 2019.

The TSB says that this crash features multiple issues in the rail industry, but specifically, the causes of this crash are said to be a lack of communication in the cab, differing experience levels for crew members on board, and a fatigued engineer.

Subsequently, the TSB announced that they are recommending Transport Canada implement changes requiring all major Canadian railways to have physical fail-safe controls on all key routes and additional training for railway operators.
