A local church is making a temporary shelter to provide a little more comfort to those without a place to sleep.

Mary Ann and Bill Galston are involved and making what they call a warming shelter to provide heavy-duty yoga mats, water, and socks. They say while they want to do the best they can, it’s still a basic sleeping sleep centre, so no food or bedding will be provided. They're holding it at Prairie Vineyard Church on Duke Avenue..

“We haven't had that many people,” explains Mary Ann. “But, I think the concept will work out well and work out well for Bill and me to look at it till the end of March.”

She adds they look to help people when the temperature goes below minus ten degrees. She says they just want to make sure that nobody’s freezing out as it can be especially rough for some people throughout the winter months. While they’ve been open for a little bit, the original plan was to be running this even sooner than they started.

“It opened December 22nd,” explains Mary Ann. “We were hoping to be sooner, but by the time we got all of our ducks in a row, it was December 22nd.”

She mentions the idea was sparked through seeing people trying to find shelter behind their regular church, and after trying to find a place for them, they decided to make it themselves.

“If people wanted to help like we could use one or two more volunteers,” explains Mary Ann. “But even donating socks, or if you have a $10 Tim Horton’s gift card.”

“We've got some great volunteers, fantastic people,” notes Bill. “But, we could use some more of them.”
